SIZING & MEASUREMENT FAQ
Ordering custom leather online requires precise measurements. Because leather has minimal stretch and provides structural protection, accurate numbers ensure a glove like fit straight out of the box.
Q1: What tools do I need to take my measurements?
Use a flexible, soft cloth measuring tape. Do not use a stiff metal construction tape measure, as it will distort body contours and produce inaccurate sizes. Keep the tape level, snug against the body, but not pulled tight enough to indent the skin. Have a second person assist you measuring yourself while bending down alters your measurements.
Q2: How do I measure for Custom Rodeo & Riding Chaps?
Wear the jeans, belt, and riding boots you plan to use in the arena or saddle before measuring.
- Waist / Belt Line: Wrap the tape around your waist exactly where your chap belt will rest (typically slightly below the natural waistline, over your jeans belt loops).
- Upper Thigh (Widest Point): Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh, approximately 1 to 2 inches below the groin. Do not pull the tape tight allow room for leg movement.
- Mid Thigh: Measure around the middle of your thigh (halfway between groin and knee).
- Knee: Measure directly around the center of your kneecap with your leg straight.
- Calf: Measure around the widest part of your calf muscle.
- Outseam (Overall Chap Length): Measure along the outside of your leg from the top edge of your jeans belt down to the ground (or to the top of the boot heel, depending on your preferred chap drape).
- Inseam: Measure from the base of the crotch seam straight down the inside of your leg to the bottom edge of your boot ankle.
Q3: How do I measure for a Custom Leather Jacket?
Wear a light shirt or the layer you plan to wear most often beneath the jacket. Stand upright in a relaxed, natural posture.
- Chest Circumference: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, passing directly beneath the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
- Waist / Stomach: Measure around your natural waistline, generally at navel level or the widest point of the torso.
- Shoulder Width: Measure straight across the back from the outer bony tip of the left shoulder to the outer bony tip of the right shoulder.
- Sleeve Length: Start at the bony tip of your shoulder and measure down the outside of your arm, past the elbow, down to the wrist bone (or where you prefer the cuff to rest).
- Back Length: Measure from the base of the back collar seam (nape of the neck) straight down the center spine to your desired jacket hemline (typically mid-zipper of your pants).
Q4: Should I add extra room/inches for “breathing room”?
No. Please submit your exact, true body measurements taken over your typical clothing. Our master pattern makers apply the industry standard ease allowances during cutting to ensure unrestricted movement, comfort, and proper ventilation.
Q5: How do I know if the chaps will fit over my boots?
Our custom chaps are patterned with traditional flared cuffs, heavy duty leg zippers, and fringe styling that comfortably sit over standard western riding and buckaroo boots. If you wear oversized roughstock boots, enter your boot shaft circumference in the “Order Notes” during checkout.
Q6: Can I send photos of my measurements or an existing chap/jacket?
Yes. If you have an existing pair of chaps or a leather jacket that fits you perfectly, you can lay it flat, photograph a tape measure running across the dimensions, and email the photos alongside your order number to support@wildworldleather.com.
Q7: What if my measurements are between two standard sizes?
Every custom piece is cut individually. You do not need to fit into a standardized size chart. Enter your exact numbers into our order form, and our artisans will draft a custom template tailored specifically to your body proportions.
